End of a very short era

The Wii U was released at the end of 2012. It was put on life support at the end of 2016. Now, it’s dead. Nintendo has officially confirmed, as of this morning, that they are halting production of the Wii U console in Japan.

The system lasted just over four years, which is crazy given that the Wii came out in 2006 and is still going in the form of the Wii Mini in some regions. I’ve held many a candlelight vigil for the Wii U over the past year or so, so I’ll spare you the rhetoric, but suffice to say it’s a sad day. I had some great times on the platform, and the GamePad and the Wii U Pro controller were fantastic options.

I think over time people will recognize the Wii U as the Dreamcast of this era, but for now, all eyes are on the Switch. Which, evidently, has a healthy set of pre-orders.
