Same old story

Tell me if you haven’t heard this before — a developer wants to bring a highly successful multiplayer game to an Xbox platform, but Microsoft refuses to budge on some requirement, usually Xbox Live Gold.

That’s what’s been happening withFinal Fantasy XIV, but director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) says there is still hope yet. What’s the holdup? Well, despite the fact that Yoshida is a “big Xbox player,” the issue is cross-platform compatability. Simply put, the wayFFXIVworks is PS3, PC, and PS4 players can all play together. Unless Microsoft allows this, it will never come to the Xbox One.

Yoshida is on the case though, telling Pocket Lintin an interview at E3 this week — “So we’re currently in talks with Microsoft, trying to convince them that this is what needs to happen.” So there you have it — if Microsoft can work it out, we may seeFFXIVon Xbox One. There is precedent for cross-play with PC players (2007’sShadowrun), but the PlayStation platforms will be a bigger problem.
