Fear the pink hair

WhenAnimal Crossing‘sVillager was revealedas one of the newcomers for the upcomingSuper Smash Bros.games on Wii U and 3DS, fans of the quirky life simulator were pleased to see the character bringing his bug net and slingshot into the foray, but manyquestionedthe choice of showcasing only a male Villager. Especially consideringAnimal Crossing‘s diverse audience andSuper Smash Bros.‘ general roster gender disparity, it would have made a lot of sense to lead with a female Villager.

In today’s update onSmashBros.com, four of the Villager skins have been shown, and the split is a perfect 50/50. Joining the black-eyed, bowl cut male Villager who has been shown inall of the previous Villager screenshotsare a blue-eyed male Villager, a blue/green-eyed female Villager, and a twinkly-eyed, pink-haired female Villager.

Whether this was planned from the beginning or done in response to fan reaction, we will probably never know. Personally, I would guess that the idea for both male and female Villagers was there all along, if only because it would make very little sense not to do that.
