Gather round kids. Y’see back in my day we didn’t have this plethora of great Netflix video game adaptations.Castlevania?The Witcher?Pah, we were lucky if we got a censored, poorly translated VHS ofanythingthat was rolling out of Japan. Time has been kinder to us, however, and we are finally being given access to some of the old-school cool that eluded us in the halcyon days of the early ’90s. Case in point: TheFatal Furyanime, which is finally headed to Blu-ray.
Two classic TV specials based on SNK’s legendary fighting franchise will be getting a long-overdue remaster, courtesy of publisher Discotek Media. The upcoming Blu-ray will include both 1992’sFatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolfand its 1993 follow-up,Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle. Beautifully scanned from an original film negative, both specials will be presented in glorious 1080p, and will feature their English and Japanese voice track options, as well as brand-new, fully corrected subtitles.
Viewers will also be able to check out the Japanese and U.S. openings for both OVAs and witness a previously cut scene fromFatal Fury 2for the first time. While all of the special features are yet to be revealed, the Blu-ray will include original trailers, an art gallery, and full commentary featuring Discotek producer Brady Hartel andanime fan Matt McMuscles. While no street date for the Blu-ray was announced, this eventual release will be a no-brainer for video game anime fans, sitting perfectly alongside Discotek’s previously released disc for 1994’sFatal Fury: The Motion Picture.
